About Us

The current troop was started nearly 47 years ago. Although the unit was in existence prior to 1967, no official records with specifics are available in the troop's archives. For a short period to September 1967, the troop disbanded, but reactivated with 13 youth and new leadership. Since then, there has been an active, on-going unit. The chartering organization has been and still is Santa Clara First Baptist Church.

Meetings are held every Monday night at the Santa Clara First Baptist Church, 3111 Benton Street, Santa Clara, Ca from 7:30 - 9:00PM. The only exception are the weeks of Christmas, New Year, and resident summer camp. On rare occasions, a meeting may be canceled due to a facility conflict.
Once a month, in lieu of the regular troop meeting, the adult leadership (Old Goat Patrol) and the PLC (Patrol Leaders Council) meet to discuss and review the troop's performance and recent activities. This generally occurs immediately after the monthly outing. Also,at the end of each weekly meeting, the PLC meets for a brief time to discuss how the meeting went and methods to improve, or plan for the following week's program.
The troop is classified as a high-adventure unit. This was appropriate when many senior youth were registered with the unit, but by the mid 2000's, most of these youth had aged out and the troop's membership ended up being young, in the range of 11-14 years. However, camping, hiking and backpacking remain the focal point of most of the outings. One-night campouts are the most common, although two-night adventures occur, with the focus on backpacking to a campsite to minimize the concept of car camping. Snow camping is also included in the outdoor program.
Service to the community is an integral part of the program. Twice a year, the troop hosts a free Bike Watch at Santa Clara Central Park for both the 4th of July Celebration and Art & Wine Festival in September. The troop also participates in the annual CROP Walk in April, providing safety patrols, first aid, and water stations. During the holidays, the chartering organization, Santa Clara First Baptist Church, stages "Bethlehem", a re-enactment of the Christmas story that 1000's of community residents attend. The troop helps with the preparations and also assists with traffic control and safety during the five-day event every year.  Since it's original charter 46 years ago, the troop has attended Camp Hi-Sierra every year. On alternating years the troop has attended International Rendezvous.
The troop in past years has been known to send a small contingent of scouts and adult leaders to two summer camps, for example Camp Hi-Sierra and Camp Whitsett in 2008. The troop has also had scouts and adult leaders attend National Jamboree as well. Every year, the troop participates in a week long backpacking / float adventure, some examples are:

1999 Northern Tier ( 170 mile canoe trip)
2000 Mt. Whitney ( 51 mile backpacking)
